Cobas-Mira Serum Chemistry Analyzer

Medical Center For Birds is one of only a few clinics in the region to own it's own Research-Grade Serum Chemistry Analyzer. The Cobas-Mira system has several advantages over the traditional bench-top analyzers and send-out services available to most veterinary clinics. First, most bench-top analyzers have not been validated (that is, tested for high accuracy and precision) with avian blood samples. They work great for dogs and cats, but birds are very different. Secondly, while regional reference laboratories offer reasonable accuracy, blood samples can be altered with time, transport, and handling. Also, regional laboratories are best tailored to serve small animals-- after all, dogs and cats are still their most common patient. However, this means that there is less flexibility in customizing  tests, in research and development of new tests since birds are a relatively a small portion of their business. So, by handling our samples in house, we can offer bird-specific chemistry panels, high quality results, timely turnaround, and we can create cutting edge tests that will help us diagnose health concerns more precisely.

Hematology

We are fortunate to have Elisabeth Szabo, an experienced hematologist available to analyze our blood films. Because birds have nucleated red blood cells (that is, each red blood cell has a nucleus whereas mammal red blood cells do not), automatic complete blood count (CBC) analyzers cannot assess avian hematology. Sometimes inconsistency can be a problem with large regional reference laboratories because different technicians can interpret blood cell types differently. Having consistent analysis by one well-trained hematologist allows our doctors to rely upon results with confidence. Elizabeth also works with our doctors and technicians to ensure that we can maintain accuracy when she is unavailable.
Abaxis Vetscan

The Vetscan is a portable benchtop chemistry machine which works with very small volumes of blood and produces results in less than 13 minutes. We use this machine primarily for critical cases or during times when the Cobas Mira analyzer is not available.
